Digital dental impression using an intraoral scanner

At our practice in Cologne we avoid conventional impressions whenever possible. Instead, the teeth are recorded digitally with the intraoral scanner – a fast 3D scan replaces the classic dental impression.1

3D X-ray (CBCT) at the orthodontist

With conventional 2D X-rays, teeth and jaws, joints and sinuses are shown completely, but with blurring and overlapping structures. As a result, they provide little meaningful information about specific details.

Using digital temporomandibular joint measurement (DMD system), we measure the movements of the lower jaw and the spaces of the temporomandibular joint at a 1:1 ratio. This 3D jaw measurement is among the precise methods of functional diagnostics.

What does digital diagnostics mean in orthodontics?

Digital diagnostics means that we record your teeth, jaws and temporomandibular joints using modern digital devices – for example the intraoral scanner, 3D X-ray imaging (cone beam CT) and digital jaw joint measurement. The result is a precise three-dimensional image of the situation in your mouth and jaws, which forms the basis for accurate and reliable treatment planning.

Does a digital dental impression with the intraoral scanner hurt?

No. The intraoral scanner records your teeth with a small camera and barely touches them. Unlike a conventional impression taken with impression material, there is no gagging and no material left behind – the scan is comfortable, quick and can be repeated at any time.

How high is the radiation exposure with 3D X-ray imaging (cone beam CT)?

Significantly lower than with a conventional CT — but higher than with a standard panoramic radiograph. For context: A single dental X-ray is approximately 0.01 millisieverts, roughly one two-hundredth of the natural radiation exposure of approximately 2.1 millisieverts you are exposed to each year in Germany anyway. The dose of a three-dimensional scan is three to forty times higher, depending on the device and scan area. That is why we use the DVT only when there is a clear clinical question that cannot be answered two-dimensionally.

What is digital jaw joint measurement (DMD system) used for?

With the DMD system, we measure the movements of the lower jaw and the spaces within the temporomandibular joint at a 1:1 ratio. This makes it possible to identify functional disorders at an early stage, to base orthodontic planning on your actual joint situation and to fabricate individual occlusal splints – which also matters for TMDtreatment.

What does digital jaw joint measurement cost – and does health insurance pay for it?

Instrumental functional analysis and temporomandibular joint measurement with the DMD system are not covered by statutory health insurance; they are billed privately according to the fee schedule for dentists. What applies in your case depends on the scope of the examination — you will receive the amount in writing before the examination. Private insurance and supplementary plans participate depending on the contract; only your insurance company can provide binding information.
