Shape memory aligners - A new dimension in aligner orthodontics

Over the past two decades, aligner treatment has become a standard practice in orthodontics. One particularly exciting development is the so-called shape-memory aligner: transparent aligners that are 3D-printed and have “shape memory.” Here, we explain in simple terms what this technology entails and what benefits it offers to patients.
What are shape-memory aligners?
Traditional clear aligners are usually thermoformed from a plastic film. Shape-memory aligners, on the other hand, are manufactured directly via 3D printing using a special material. The term “shape memory” describes a unique property of this material: even if the aligner is deformed, it returns to its original intended shape at body temperature.
Gentle, even force
Thanks to this feature, the aligner exerts a constant, gentle force on the teeth without the effectiveness diminishing over time. This allows for natural, gentle tooth movement and can improve comfort. Before insertion, the aligner can also be briefly placed in warm water, which makes it more flexible and ensures a more comfortable fit.
Better fit and improved hygiene
Because the aligners are 3D-printed, their thickness is very uniform and they fit exceptionally well. Another advantage relates to hygiene: the material is heat-resistant and can be cleaned at higher temperatures, which reduces bacterial growth—something that isn’t possible with traditional plastic aligners, as they would warp if exposed to such heat.
An example of treatment
An adult patient wanted a more harmonious smile. She had gaps in her front and back teeth, as well as a missing tooth that had caused misalignment. Using clear aligners made in our own practice, we first moved the teeth into their planned positions. A colleague then filled the remaining small gaps using a minimally invasive technique with tooth-colored composite material. The result was an even, harmonious smile—achieved through a gentle, virtually invisible treatment. We also use modern, clear aligners in our practice.
What this development means
Shape-memory aligners demonstrate how aligner therapy is evolving technologically: a more precise fit, more even force distribution, better hygiene, and a more sustainable manufacturing process. As with any aligner treatment, careful planning and consistent wear of the aligners are crucial to success.
