Invisalign Cologne: nearly invisible to straight teeth
You want to straighten your teeth without it being noticeable at work or in photos? Invisalign makes this possible: transparent aligners that you can remove at any time and that are barely noticed in everyday life. At JUST KFO in Cologne-Rodenkirchen, we have guided over 8,500 aligner treatments since 2001 — planned and fabricated in our own in-house master dental laboratory.
Invisalign corrects misaligned teeth with clear, removable aligners – nearly invisible and barely noticeable in everyday life. Suitable for children and teens as well as for adults.
Invisalign Cologne at a glance
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment with clear, removable plastic aligners. These aligners move the teeth in small, digitally precalculated steps into the planned position. About every one to two weeks, you switch to the next aligner.
- Visibility: transparent, barely noticeable in everyday life
- Wear time: 20 to 22 hours daily, removable for eating and brushing teeth
- Treatment duration: usually 6 to 18 months, sometimes longer for extensive bite corrections
- Cost: depending on scope, typically 2.500 to 8.500 euros; installment payment available. These are non-binding reference values; actual costs are determined after examination and treatment planning in the treatment and cost estimate according to GOZ
- Suitable for: adolescents and adults, also for children with suitable findings
- Fabrication at JUST KFO: digitally planned, produced in our in-house master dental laboratory in Cologne
What distinguishes Invisalign from other aligners
Invisalign is a branded system by the manufacturer Align Technology and the longest-documented aligner method worldwide. The term is often used colloquially to refer to all clear aligners — but technically, it is not.
There are a number of aligner systems with different materials, planning software, and indication ranges. If you would first like to get an overview, you will find the general classification under clear aligners. This page is specifically about Invisalign and how we perform this treatment in Cologne.
Why aligners belong in specialist hands
Aligners are not mail-order goods. Treatments that run exclusively online and without specialist control forgo exactly the diagnostics that determine success or failure.
Dr. Julia Steinmaier has addressed this, among other things, as an expert in the RTL report “Are dental aligners from online providers dangerous?” and classified the risks of cheap aligners. An overview of media appearances and publications can be found under Facts about Dr. Julia Steinmaier. Our position remains unchanged: An aligner therapy belongs in the hands of a specialist in orthodontics.
For whom Invisalign is suitable
Not every misalignment can be corrected equally well with aligners. Honest assessment is part of our consultation.
These findings can be corrected well with aligners
- Crowding in the front and posterior tooth areas
- Gaps between the teeth (diastema)
- Mild to moderate tipping and rotations
- Relapse after previous braces treatment
- Esthetic corrections in the visible front tooth area
- Many cases in adult orthodontics
Where aligner therapy may reach its limits
- Severe skeletal jaw misalignments
- Very severe tooth displacements or impacted teeth
- Cases requiring surgical co-treatment
- Treatments with insufficient compliance – the aligner works only when worn
In these situations, a combination treatment is often the more reliable approach. For children during growth, we often work with a removable appliancebefore aligners become an option. We explain the options for young patients in the section on orthodontics for children and adolescents.
Whether Invisalign is suitable for your case is determined during the initial consultation – based on a complete diagnostic workup, not a photo.
Your Invisalign treatment in Cologne in five steps
Step 1: Initial consultation and diagnostic records
We examine your teeth, your bite and your temporomandibular joints and discuss what you expect from the result. You learn which treatment approaches are realistic for your case. The consultation takes place at our orthodontic practice in Cologne-Rodenkirchen .
Step 2: Digital 3D scan instead of impression
Instead of impression material, we use an intraoral scanner. The scan takes just a few minutes and does not cause gagging. How this works is described in the article on tooth correction without impression using the intraoral scanner. Where needed, we complement this with other methods from our digital diagnostics.
Step 3: Treatment planning and simulation
Based on the scan data, our orthodontists plan every single tooth movement. You will see in advance how your tooth alignment changes step by step12 and what the result should look like. Production begins only after this planning is complete.
Step 4: Fabrication in our in-house master dental laboratory
Nearly all of our appliances are made in Cologne. Our in-house master dental laboratory with its own 3D printing facility means short turnaround times, rapid replacement if needed, and no quality loss through external providers.
Step 5: Treatment start and follow-up appointments
You receive your sets of aligners and switch them according to the agreed schedule. In regular follow-up appointments we check whether the teeth are following the plan – and make adjustments if needed. That is exactly what the in-person appointments are for.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
The duration of treatment depends on the initial condition and on your compliance. As a rough guide:
- Minor anterior correction: approx. 4 to 8 months
- Moderate crowding, one or both arches: approx. 8 to 14 months
- More comprehensive alignment with bite correction: approx. 14 to 24 months
What influences the treatment duration
These values are based on experience from our practice and are not a guarantee. What matters is the daily wearing time of 20 to 22 hours. If aligners are removed frequently, treatment will take longer — no amount of planning can change that. Additionally, the number of teeth to be moved, the type of movement, and the bone’s response all play a role.

The treatment outcomes shown are from our practice. Initial findings, treatment duration, and results vary individually; the images do not allow conclusions about the course of any other treatment.
An example from our daily practice: moderate reshaping of the upper and lower jaws, straightening of front teeth misalignment, treatment duration five months. We have documented the complete progression in the treatment example for crowding . Such outcomes are possible when the diagnosis and wearing discipline align — but they are not a benchmark for every case.
Further documented cases from our practice can be found in our image gallery: initial situation, treatment goal, and final result. You can read how other patients experienced their treatment in our Google reviews: 5.0 stars from 223 reviews.
What Invisalign costs in Cologne
The cost of aligner treatment depends on the scope and complexity of the planned tooth movements. In our practice, costs typically range between 2.500 and 8.500 euros: brief corrections in the front tooth area are at the lower end, comprehensive reshaping of both jaws at the upper.
We calculate each treatment plan individually — you will receive the total cost in writing before treatment begins, with no obligation. Payment plans are available.
What health insurance and supplemental plans cover
For patients with statutory health insurance, aligners are generally not reimbursed. Private health insurance and supplemental dental plans may cover part of the cost, depending on the policy.
We have compiled all cost factors, calculation examples, and reimbursement information in detail: Invisalign costs in detail.

Professional foundation
You will be treated exclusively by specialists in orthodontics – aligners are not a side service for us, but core expertise. Dr. Julia Steinmaier publishes in the Journal of Aligner Orthodontics and is an author in the textbook “Aligner Orthodontics and Orofacial Orthopedics”. A selection of our work can be found under Professional Publications. You can see who will welcome you at the practice under our team – in addition to Dr. Steinmaier, Dr. Zanders-Grote and Dr. Pölzl.
Invisalign for temporomandibular joint issues
One point that sets us apart from most aligner providers: we never view tooth position in isolation from the temporomandibular joint.
Misaligned teeth and functional disorders of the masticatory system are often connected. If you report clicking in the joint, morning tension, or headaches, we include that in the treatment planning. Our practice has a dedicated focus in this area with TMD pain therapy and digital temporomandibular joint measurement — including scientific work on aligner treatment for temporomandibular disorders.
For you, this means: We don’t just correct the appearance — we also make sure the bite functions properly at the end.
After treatment: keeping the result stable
Teeth have a memory. Without stabilization, there is a tendency for them to move back toward their original position — regardless of which method was used for correction.
Therefore, the end of treatment always includes a retainer, either as a fixed wire on the inside of the teeth or as a removable appliance for nighttime wear.3 Which option suits you best will be discussed at the end of treatment – you can find all details at Retention and Retainers.
Caring for aligners in daily life
Aligners and teeth should be cleaned after every meal before the tray is reinserted. Practical guidance can be found under Brushing Your Teeth with Braces. We have also compiled a detailed comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of aligner therapy .

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign in Cologne
Tap a question to open the answer.
What does Invisalign cost in Cologne?
+
In our practice, costs typically range between 2.500 and 8.500 euros, depending on the diagnosis and scope of treatment. Short corrections of the front teeth are significantly lower than comprehensive reshaping of both jaws. You will receive a written, non-binding treatment and cost plan before treatment begins. Installment payment is available.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
+
Typically between 6 and 18 months. Minor corrections are sometimes completed in four to eight months; comprehensive bite corrections can take up to 24 months. The daily wear time of 20 to 22 hours is the most important influencing factor.
Is Invisalign really invisible?
+
The trays are transparent and fit closely against the teeth. In conversation, they are typically not noticeable. Upon very close inspection and under certain lighting conditions, they can be visible — as can the small tooth-colored attachments that may be necessary for individual movements.
Who is Invisalign not suitable for?
+
By now, almost all conditions can be treated with aligners — though in complex cases, often in combination with brackets, mini-implants, or a combined orthodontic-surgical treatment.
If poor wear compliance is foreseeable, a fixed appliance is often the more reliable solution.
Does health insurance cover Invisalign?
+
Statutory health insurance generally does not cover the costs, neither for children and adolescents nor for adults. Private health insurance and supplemental plans may contribute partially, depending on the contract.
Can I eat and drink normally with Invisalign?
+
Yes. The aligners are removed for every meal. There are no restrictions on food choices — a clear difference from fixed braces. It is important to clean your teeth before reinserting the aligners.
What are attachments and do I need them?
+
Attachments are small tooth-colored composite elements bonded to individual teeth. They provide the aligner with points of engagement for specific movements, such as rotations. Whether they are necessary in your case depends on the treatment plan. They are removed completely after treatment.
Do patients regret aligner treatment?
+
Dissatisfaction usually stems from two reasons: unrealistic expectations about the outcome or insufficient diagnostics beforehand. We prevent both by openly discussing what is achievable with aligners and what is not before treatment begins — and by closely monitoring progress throughout.
Can I speak well with Invisalign?
+
During the first few days, speech may be slightly affected while the tongue adjusts to the aligner. This phase usually lasts only a few days. After that, most patients speak completely normally.
From what age is aligner treatment possible?
+
There are aligner variants for mixed dentition and for adolescents. Whether aligner treatment is advisable in a specific case or whether another appliance is the better choice depends on the clinical findings — not on age alone. More on this under Orthodontics for Children and Adolescents.
Where can I find an orthodontist for Invisalign in Cologne?
+
Look for the designation “specialist in orthodontics” — it requires several years of advanced training after dental school. Also ask about the number of aligner treatments performed and who plans and fabricates the aligners. You will find our practice in Cologne-Rodenkirchen, Hauptstraße 50.
