Long-term effect of approximal enamel reduction

Authors: B.U. Zachrisson, L. Nyøygaard, K. Mobarak

Results: No new carious lesions were found. Minor labial gingival recessions were found in three older adults. There was no evidence of pathological processes in the area of the tooth roots. The distance between the tooth roots was statistically significantly greater in patients after proximal enamel reduction than in non-treated individuals; 59 of the 61 patients did not report any increased temperature sensitivity. During the examination, the irregularity index value was only 0.67 (± 0.64).

Conclusion: Proximal enamel reduction performed according to this procedure did not result in iatrogenic damage. Dental caries, gingival problems or alveolar margin loss did not occur more frequently and the interradicular distances between the lower anterior teeth had not decreased. A low value for the irregularity index was found at the follow-up examination.
