On May 4th, orthodontists from all over Germany met in Bonn for the congress: “Mouth closed!? Breathing in children”, organized by the BDK (Professional Association of German Orthodontists).
A key topic was the correction of mouth breathing in children in order to promote safe nasal breathing, jaw development and clear pronunciation. The discussions highlighted the often underestimated importance of a closed mouth and the role of orthodontists in making this clear and understandable to parents.
The contributions on sleep-related breathing disorders in children, which - unlike in adults - are not characterized by daytime sleepiness but often by hyperactivity, were particularly informative.
The congress emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and provided a platform for the exchange of interdisciplinary knowledge, which is essential for the treatment of this complex problem.
We are pleased to have refreshed our knowledge in this area and to be able to pass it on to our patients!
