With JUST KFO in Cologne-Rodenkirchen, we encounter this question almost every day - and quite rightly so: anyone who decides to undergo orthodontic treatment wants to know exactly what to expect. Orthodontic treatment, such as the use of braces, can often be associated with an unpleasant feeling. The good news is that braces can feel unfamiliar at first - but real pain is rare. In this article, we explain what you will feel, how long it takes to get used to them and what helps if you experience discomfort.

What happens in the mouth after insertion?
Whether fixed braces, aligners or removable appliances - as soon as braces are worn for the first time, they begin to exert gentle forces on the teeth and jaw. This pressure on the teeth can lead to slight pain as the teeth have to get used to their new position. These pressure stimuli are necessary to trigger tooth movement - and this is exactly what can be noticeable in the first few days.
Typical sensations in the first few days:
Feeling of pressure on individual teeth
Sensitivity when chewing
Friction on lips, cheeks or tongue
Slight feelings of tension in the jaw area
These reactions are completely normal and a sign that the braces are working.
How long do the complaints last?
The familiarization phase usually only lasts a few days. Most patients report that the feeling of pressure subsides significantly after around 3 to 5 days. However, patients have different experiences and the discomfort can vary from person to person. Minor rubbing inside the mouth can be well cushioned with protective wax, which we provide in the practice.
Even after subsequent adjustments (e.g. when changing the archwire or aligner), short-term tensions can occur - these are usually much milder than when first inserted.
What helps with pressure or friction?
At JUST KFO we attach great importance to a pleasant treatment. These tips will help you to get through the adjustment period well:
Soft food in the first few days (e.g. soups, puree, yogurt)
Cold (e.g. cold water or ice) relieves pressure
Braces wax for irritation on lips or cheeks
Don't neglect dental care - especially important for sensitive teeth
Only if necessary: mild painkiller after consultation with us or your GP
Do fixed braces hurt more than aligners?
Fixed braces often initially lead to stronger feelings of pressure than transparent aligners due to the continuous force effect. The latter can be removed and exert very even, gentle forces - making them particularly comfortable in everyday life. Nevertheless, aligners can also cause a slight feeling of tension in the first few days, especially when inserting them. When inserting the braces, we usually explain in detail what you can expect and how you can deal with any discomfort. If you do experience pain, it is advisable to consult your orthodontist for suitable treatment measures and solutions.
Our experience: Good preparation takes away the fear
At JUST KFO , we consciously take the time to prepare you or your child as a patient for the start with braces. During the consultation, we explain step by step what you can expect, what aids are available and how you can master everyday life without any problems. This builds trust - and the question "Does it hurt?" quickly loses its terror.
Conclusion: Unusual - yes, bad? No!
Braces can cause an unfamiliar feeling in the first few days. Slight discomfort such as pressure or friction can have various causes and are temporary and easily treatable. In our practice, we accompany you sensitively through every phase of treatment - from the first consultation to the last check-up appointment.
